John Taylor

Lord Taylor was raised to the peerage as Baron Taylor of Warwick, of Warwick in the County of Warwickshire in 1996. He is not affiliated with any group or party

Lord Taylor was born in 1952 and became the youngest and the only black peer in the upper house in 1996. From head boy at Moseley Grammar School, Birmingham, he studied English literature and law at Keele University followed by the Inns of Court School of Law in London. He was called to the bar in 1978, when he joined the same chambers as Justice Secretary Ken Clarke.

As well as his successful career as a barrister, he has also served as a judge, university chancellor, company director, special advisor to the Home Office and television and radio presenter.

In 1992, Lord Taylor started to become more active in the local community and become a Conservative candidate for Cheltenham in the 1992 General Election, and whilst he had not won, his highly publicised campaign brought him to the attention of senior figures in the Conservative party and gave him a certain public standing.

Additionally he is also the director of the Warwick Leadership Foundation charity, and continues to play a role in public life, helping the marginalised and promoting diversity.
