Amirali Bhatia

Lord Bhatia was raised to the peerage as Baron Bhatia of Hampton in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in 2001. He is non-affiliated.

Lord Bhatia was born in East Africa 1932 and was educated in schools in Tanzania and India. He moved to the UK in 1972 and joined the Lords in 2001 under Tony Blair's 'people's peers' scheme, after receiving his OBE in 1997.

He has spent most of his professional life working on the board of various international and national charities. Most notably, Oxfam (1985-1993), National Lottery Charity Board (1994-2000), and is currently the Vice-Chairman of the India800 Foundation (2010-) and Chairman of the Forbes Trust (1985-).

In 2003 Lord Bhatia received the Beacon Fellowship Prize for his leadership role in countering social deprivation and exclusion in the UK and internationally. He was a member of the House of Lords Committee on Religious Offences from 2002-2003, and his main policy areas include: Education, employment and training, international affairs, and energy and environment.

He and his wife have three daughters.
