Turbanology: PM praises Sikh exhibition

A new art exhibition called ‘Turbanology: Sikhs Unwrapped’ launched in the Nishkam Civic Centre in Birmingham last week, and its already making a positive statement generating praise from Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron.

Following the success of his independent documentary ‘Turbanology: After 7/7, journalist and exhibition director Jay Singh-Sohal explores the public perception and significance of the turban post 9/11.

The exhibition provides an educational, fun, and hands on experience. Singh-Sohal commented saying:

“The team had set out to create a project that would provide a unique insight into what Sikhs consider their crown. The project offers visitors an exciting and interactive opportunity to learn about this key Sikh symbol. By engaging diverse audiences in the art of the turban, we demystify what has mistakenly become synonymous with terrorism and fear.”

The exhibit will feature specially commissioned films, keynote speakers including Dr Mohinder Singh and Gurinder Singh Mandla, as well as turban tying workshops for children led by Sikh storyteller Roop Singh.

Praising ‘Turbanology’, Prime Minister David Cameron stated:

"The Government recognises the vital contribution that the Sikh community makes to national life and the wide range of assistance provided within the community for individual Sikhs, particularly those of advancing years.

We acknowledge the hard work undertaken in countless Gurdwaras across the country which addresses problems in local communities, for instance providing food to homeless people - this is the Big Society in action.

It gives me great pleasure to send my very best wishes on this celebratory occasion."

'Turbanology' will be in Birmingham till 24th June, and will also be appearing in Leamington & Warwick, Slough, Leeds, and Derby.
