Police had to intervene in an amateur cup final after racist chants and allegations of attacks on players and the referee.

Fairbank United, of Manningham, Bradford, were contesting the final of the Wilf Ward Memorial Trophy in Cleckheaton against Park Football Club, of Dewsbury, when police were called by aggrieved spectators.

About 60 people were watching the game, police said, both sides are accused of racist chants but fans allegedly squared up to players during an extra-time pitch invasion.

The referee was apparently hit by a fan, one player was allegedly spat at, one suffered a suspected broken leg and another a black eye before police intervened.

Officers were sent to the match, hosted by Liversedge Football Club and spoke to both teams and supporters.

Fairbank’s players and fans were held back at the ground to allow the opposition contingent to leave first.
