Michael Gove controversy over Mosque comments

Education Minister Michael Gove has provoked controversy with his comments over the building of a Mosque in his Surrey Heath constituency near the Sandhurst military base. The Mosque lost its planning permission sparking a public inquiry into the decision.

When asked why he opposed the building of the Mosque he said:

"Because of the way in which it would overlook the royal military academy, (the mosque) would also not be appropriate for all sorts of other reasons."

Having not adequately explained what these other reasons are his comments drew criticism. Christopher Lockhart-Mummery QC told the inquiry at Camberley theatre:

"I have seen what I regard as utterly irresponsible statements that there is clear view of the Royal Military Academy. It is not remotely and has never been the case."

Previously Gove had decided to not take sides in the issue. His latest contribution has forced him to deny that he’s appealing to anti-Islamic sentiment.
