Guardian enters CENSUS 2011 debate

Joe Harker in today’s Guardian writes a piece on the contentious issue of identity politics and how he'll be ticking the African box on this year’s census form. He argues that that it is time for peoples of African descent top come together by defining themselves under a single and united term.

He writes:

“…we have a right to define ourselves in terms of our history. After all, African, that's what we are – no ifs, buts or maybes. Our ancestry in Africa is ultimately the one thing that bonds us with every other black person in the world. There's nothing left to prove.”

The piece had received over 150 comments by this morning and is sure to rise throughout the next few days. It seems any debate on the Guardian Comment is Free website draws in its fair share bigots and abusers.
