From St Matthew's to Homerton: OBV CEO Lord Woolley to become the first Black man to head an Oxbridge College

It's official: OBV CEO Lord Woolley has been announced as the incoming principal at Cambridge’s Homerton College.

In taking the role, he becomes the first Black man to be elected as head of an Oxbridge college. He follows the path of Sonita Alleyne and Baroness Amos becoming only the third black person to hold such a position.

It also marks another step in a well-known leadership journey. Those familiar with OBV’s work will be well aware of both Lord Woolley’s and indeed the organisation's passion for guiding leadership from minority backgrounds to positions of influence at both local and national level. 

This news is very much an extension of that remit.

It ties a college with reformist roots in East London to a veteran political activist carrying strong personal and professional links in the same part of the world. 

The beginnings of the organisations through which he has built his work are equally rooted in reformist ideals. From Chater88 and The 1990 Trust to Operation Black Vote, their goals have prioritised voter registration, highlighting persistent race inequalities and broadening the UK’s power structures so that they too may look like the people they aim to serve.
