Ms Brown comes to London town

in

Hilary Brown is a one woman force of nature. Hailing from one the oldest black communities in the UK, Cardiff Wales, all who know her affectionately as her Ms Brown in that typical Caribbean tradition of someone held in high regard. Ms Brown has a long history of public service to the community.

For those with long memories you may remember the case many years ago of two young black men who were the subject to a brutal and savage racist attack, in the centre of Cardiff.

Marcus Walters 19 and Francisco Borg 17 were driving through the Cardiff city in broad daylight in 1997. Marcus had his four-year-old sister in the back of the car, when they were victims of road rage incident. They were chased and subsequently surrounded by a gang of racists who proceeded to beat the two boy’s within an inch of their life.

The terrified child in the back of the car was passed to a stranger for safety and hours later was still not returned to the family.

The whole incident was captured on CCTV and despite the overwhelming evidence against the white youth, both Marcus and Francisco were arrested by South Wales Police.

Hilary was the sole driving force huge that led a nationwide justice campaign that toured the country supported by The 1990 Trust and The Society of Black Lawyers. Her single minded determination to get justice for the boys paid off.

The charges against the boys were eventually dropped .The Police Complaint Authority, the discredited forerunner of the Independent Police Complaints Commission, were to later discipline a number of officers with a range of minor charges. Their attackers were convicted but their sentences were derisory.

Hilary was the first black woman in the UK in the early 1990’s to become manager of more than one Citizen Advice Bureaux when she was appointed manager of Butetown and Grangetown CAB’x in 1993. Both were located in the most culturally diverse areas in Wales, innovation came as second nature to Hilary and she organised the first women’s only waiting room in the CAB Service. Not content with that she also became the Vice Chair of the National CAB Black Workers Group, Chair of CAB Black Women’s Group and Chair of the National Assembly Against Racism. Hilary was also one of the two founding members of the National Black Youth Forum in Wales which saw young black people being mentored by Hilary to become positive Black Roles models.

Hilary earned and retains a reputation as an indomitable fighter for the rights of her clients many of who faced racism and injustice. It was there that she became aware of the terrible injustice at the hands of the state, faced by refuges and asylum seekers and the terribly poor legal representation available to them.

In 2003 she became accredited by the Law Societies and opened her legal practice Virgo Consultancy Services Ltd, the name is apt . Virgos are notorious for being picky and having an obsession for detail. Hilary is forensic when it comes to the small print, an extremely important quality in the field of law.

Through her newly established company she offered representation to refugees and asylum seekers in the UK and indeed has a broad based client base with clients coming from all over the world. Hilary’s fame and success rate was spreading fast. Her company has one of the highest success rates in challenging both the Home Office and UK Borders Agency decisions to deport individuals and families.

Living on Brixton I too often see, the tragic consequences of unscrupulous legal representation by shyster lawyers who fleece money from people facing immigration difficulties. Case after case comes my way of people seeking help after they have been robbed of their money and left to face the consequences, that can literally on occasion result in imprisonment, deportation and even death.

With a growing reputation for getting the job done, Ms Brown’s business continued to flourish. As a result she has now expanded opening an office in Brixton South London, offering her passionate and committed services, to people seeking to regularize their immigration status her in the UK, seek visa applications to come to the UK or seek the protection of the UK from oppressive regimes around the world.

She has come a long way, has Ms Hilary Brown a campaigner for justice and now a passionate professional legal advocate with a long and credible history.

Many who know her will welcome her presence in London, not least those seeking professional representation.
