Big Labour local wins, but Boris bucks trend
The Labour party has not enjoyed this level of political success for a long time. Results coming in show that Labour has one an extra 500 seats, with the big losers being the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats losing 288 seats and 133 seats respectively. Although present Mayor seems to be bucking the national trend and is on course to notch up what will be a famous victory if as the early results suggest he has won.
It also looks like the only remaining BNP councillor in Burnley has lost his seat with the Party losing more than 50% of its voting share.
In most of the referendums for a directly elected Mayors it looks as though the public bickering of the two main London Mayoral candidates has put many people off with cities including Manchester, Nottingham and Bradford rejecting directly elected Mayors.
After his stunning success in the Bradford by-election George Galloway’s Respect Party have won an historical five seats in the Bradford local elections which also included defeating the Labour Party leader there.
Throughout the day we will try and pick out the number of BME candidates who were successful.
Looking at the overall picture OBV’s Simon Woolley stated,
"Clearly the Coalition Government are facing the mid-term blues. The question will be is this a mid term blip or have the public lost faith in the austerity measures that are being felt. On another point I think it’s great to see the beginning of the end for the British National Party. For a very long they masqueraded as politicians whilst secretly harbouring pretty vile and hate filled views. Thank fully they’ve been found out and booted of office."
